Focus on the Present Moment
The present moment releases happiness when you are able to focus your attention on the right topics. Appreciating the moment should be practiced all day, every day, because it helps you feel relaxed whether you are at work or at home.
Present Moment
Focusing on the present moment is a difficult “happiness technique.” It’s not difficult to implement, but it’s difficult to use consistently. You can apply it in any situation. Whether you are stuck in traffic or in a tense meeting, focusing on the present moment will allow you to see the joy that you may usually miss.
There are two separate blogs on my personal website, karlstaib.com, that will help you begin your journey toward relaxing in the moment. The first one is the series Meditation for Beginners, which will take you through a step-by-step process of preparing yourself to calm your mind and body. The second set of articles, Series on Awareness, will help you obtain a better grasp on how to tune into your life.
Difficult Choices Require Clarity
The better you understand your emotions, the clearer your choices will become. If you must decide between buying a new car or a new roof for your house, it will probably seem overwhelming at first until you begin to analyze the situation. Maybe your old car is breaking down and if you don’t buy a new one, you’re not sure how you are going to get to work. Maybe your roof needs to be replaced or you’ll damage the interior of your house. This is a stressful situation if you allow yourself to stay stuck on these two choices. There are plenty of ways to slow down and make the best possible decision. You need to make a list of all the choices you have at your disposal – borrowing money from a bank or friend, selling your home and moving into an apartment, fixing the roof and borrowing a car from your parents, etc. The options are there and you have to pick the one that will create the least amount of worry. Be honest with yourself. When you have a good grasp on what will be the best choice, then make it and stick to it. Try not to look back; you did the best you could with the information you had.
The clearer your choices are, the easier it is to generate happiness. That is why understanding what you really need is so important. If you need a car, then you must figure out a way to make that happen. If you love your home, then you must make a sacrifice. When you understand what truly matters to you, then the choices you must make will be easy.
